How the Precious Metals Average Cost Calculator works

Metal spend = troy-ounce quantity × entered price per troy ounce
Row cash outlay = metal spend + entered acquisition cost
Metal-only weighted price = metal spend for that metal ÷ troy ounces for that metal
All-in average cost = cash outlay for that metal ÷ troy ounces for that metal
Entered-current value = quantity × entered current price

Gold and silver remain separate because their ounce quantities and unit prices are not interchangeable. Only same-currency cash outlay and entered-current value are combined at portfolio level.

Worked example from the audited fixture

Two entered gold rows total 0.3 fine troy oz, USD 770 of metal spend and USD 15 of costs, producing USD 2,616.67/oz all-in. Two silver rows total 30 troy oz, USD 920 of metal spend and USD 25 of costs, producing USD 31.50/oz all-in.

Total cash outlay is USD 1,730. At entered current prices of USD 2,650 gold and USD 31 silver, portfolio value is USD 1,725 and the difference from outlay is −USD 5, or −0.2890%. Those are entered-price calculations, not executable sale proceeds.

Use and limitations

  • Enter fine troy ounces for gold and troy ounces for silver; do not enter coin count, grams or gross package weight.
  • Enter premiums, commissions, shipping or other acquisition costs once. Do not duplicate a cost already included in unit price.
  • The currency field is a label only. Convert mixed-currency records before entry.
  • Dates are optional ledger evidence. Same-day rows are allowed, but dated rows cannot move backwards.
  • No live quote, historical return, authenticity check, selling spread, storage, insurance, tax lot or disposal method is supplied.
  • Mechanical scenarios do not forecast returns or recommend gold, silver or any allocation.

Frequently asked questions

  • For each metal, the calculator totals entered quantity times price plus entered acquisition costs, then divides that metal’s total cash outlay by its troy-ounce quantity.
  • Gold and silver ounces have different unit prices and are not interchangeable. Only same-currency cash amounts and entered-current values are combined.
  • Enter the acquisition costs you want reflected in all-in average cost. Leave a row cost at zero if its entered price already includes every intended cost.
  • It accepts five columns with the exact header date, metal, troy_ounces, price_per_troy_ounce, extra_cost. Metal must be XAU or XAG, with up to 24 rows.
  • They multiply both current prices you entered by 75%, 90%, 100%, 110% and 125% and revalue the same quantities. They are mechanical cases, not forecasts.
  • No. Tax lots, currency rules, fee treatment, disposals and basis methods vary by jurisdiction. This tool only reconciles entered acquisition arithmetic.
  • No. Convert fine-metal content to troy ounces first. Do not use coin count, gross item weight or avoirdupois ounces.
  • No. It excludes any unentered dealer spread, selling fee, tax, storage, execution or product-specific term and is not a realizable quote.
