How the Futures Margin Calculator works
Total maintenance requirement = entered maintenance margin per contract × whole contracts
Funds after each comparison = entered allocated funds − applicable total
Whole-contract capacity = entered allocated funds ÷ applicable amount per contract, rounded down
The page multiplies current amounts that you supply. It does not derive futures margin from notional value or a universal leverage ratio because requirements can depend on exchange, clearing-firm, broker, account, portfolio and market conditions.
Audited historical CME education example
CME’s Performance Bonds/Margins FAQ presents a historical example with USD 4,000 initial margin and USD 3,200 maintenance margin. Those figures are teaching inputs from that example, not current ES requirements.
With two contracts and USD 15,000 entered funds, total initial is USD 8,000, total maintenance is USD 6,400, and the difference is USD 1,600. The funds comparisons are USD 7,000 after initial and USD 8,600 above maintenance. Capacity floors to three contracts by the entered initial amount and four by the entered maintenance amount.

Futures margin is not a stock down payment
CME and the CFTC describe futures margin as a performance bond or funds kept on hand to support contractual obligations. It is not payment for ownership of the full underlying asset. Because a futures position can control notional exposure larger than the deposit, losses can exceed the amount initially posted.
Market moves debit or credit the account, and firms may require amounts above exchange minimums. This arithmetic page has no access to those live account changes.
Assumptions and limits
- All amounts are entered manually in USD; no price, margin file or currency conversion is fetched.
- Requirements may change with volatility and may differ across exchange, clearing firm, broker, account type, holding period and risk classification.
- Portfolio offsets, spreads, options, open orders, other positions, collateral haircuts and concentration rules are excluded.
- Variation margin, mark-to-market account changes, commissions, fees, slippage and taxes are excluded.
- “Within entered funds” and capacity floors are not verified buying power, a safe cash reserve, a margin-call forecast or order approval.
- The output is not a position-size recommendation, order instruction, suitability decision, return forecast or financial advice.

- Identify the exact exchange, symbol and delivery month.
- Obtain the current initial and maintenance requirements that apply to the account and intended holding period.
- Check whether the firm uses higher house requirements or distinct intraday and overnight terms.
- Enter positive whole contracts and compare both totals with one explicitly chosen funds amount.
- Review the five contract and funds-sensitivity rows as arithmetic, not recommended sizing.
